چکیده

Suitability of the Sauter mean diameter and the surface-area mean diameter for representing the ignition and combustor behavior of polydisperse sprays is examined. Initial size distributions considered are the Nukiyama-Tanasawa distribution and a bidisperse spray. Two physical situations are analyzed. In the first, the ignition characteristics of a polydisperse spray in the viscinity of a hot wall are studied. In the second, the flame propagation through a mixture of air and polydisperse spray in a constant-volume combustor is investigated. For both situations, the relevant two-phase equations are solved by a hybrid Eulerian-Lagrangian numerical method. The results indicate that the ignition behavior of polydisperse sprays is best represented by the surfacearea mean diameter, whereas the flame propagation characteristics are best correlated by the Sauter mean diameter. These correlations are observed over a wide range of initial droplet size, size distribution, fuel volatility, and overall equivalence ratio, which is typical in practical combustion systems.

Ignition of hydraulic fluid sprays by open flames and hot surfaces

A study of the ignition of non-fire-resistant hydraulic fluid sprays was conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Both an open flame and a hot steel surface were used as the external heat sources. With the open flame as the heat source, the minimum oil temperature and minimum spray nozzle pressure that resulted in an ignition were measured. The effects of the dist...

-Theoretical and experimental studies dealing with the spray ignition phenomena are reviewed. Two major topics covered are external-source ignition of liquid fuel sprays and spontaneous spray ignition. Experimental and theoretical investigations of external-source ignition of sprays employing different configurations are discussed first. Three major topics included here are: (i) ignition of qui...

Conditional Moment Closure Modelling for Spark Ignition in a Turbulent N-heptane Spray

Ignition and flame stabilisation have been simulated in a turbulent, bluff body stabilised spray flame. A complete first order Conditional Moment Closure (CMC) model for spray combustion is presented, as well as CMC modelling for spark ignition. The new elements of the two phase model formalism and the spark ignition models are illustrated using a one dimensional spray ignition example. It is s...

Effect of Gravity on Laminar Premixed Gas Combustion II: Ignition and Extinction Phenomena

Minimum ignition energies and flame radii as a function of time were measured for near-limit, limit, and sublimit fuel-lean methane-air mixtures burning at one-g and zero-g. Minimum ignition energy values were the same at one-g and zero-g except for mixtures very near the zero-g flammability limit and leaner, where the zero-g values were much higher than the one-g values. For sublimit mixtures ...
